Chess City Guide

Checkmate! Experience the Unique Chess City of Elista Guide

Chess City, officially known as City Chess, is a unique and somewhat surreal attraction in Elista, built to host the 33rd Chess Olympiad in 1998. It's a testament to Kalmykia's passion for chess and its former president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov's vision. Even if you're not a chess enthusiast, the architectural oddity and the story behind its creation make it a worthwhile visit. The complex features a central building shaped like a giant chessboard, as well as numerous cottages and buildings designed with chess themes. The main building, the Chess Palace, has hosted numerous chess tournaments and events. While the initial vision was to create a fully functioning city dedicated to chess, it has evolved into more of a tourist attraction and a venue for events. The architecture is a mix of modern and traditional Kalmyk styles, creating a distinctive and somewhat bizarre atmosphere. Visitors can explore the Chess Palace, wander through the streets of Chess City, and take photos with the chess-themed architecture. You can also try your hand at a game of chess on the outdoor chessboards. While there are limited dining options within Chess City itself, you can find restaurants and cafes in nearby Elista. The area is also used for cultural events and festivals, so check the local listings to see if anything is happening during your visit.
